Mould
Mould is now recognised in two forms, allergenic or Toxic.
Mould spores can be found almost anywhere on the planet.
Mould is a natural waste disposal system which digests
organic materials. There are generally two types of mould
, one that eats dead organic material (saprophyte &
one that eats live organisms, this could be called infectious
or parasitic. While mould generally is a useful asset
inn the environment it clearly may, cause a serious health
threat in the built environment. While the mould spores
may be everywhere they are usually harmless until activated
by moisture. Water damage & slow remediation are obvious
concerns & various sources acknowledge that where
buildings are not dried or cleaned within 2-3 days mould
is likely to flourish.
Allergic reactions
The allergenic effects are recognisable in all those exposed
depending on dose. Dose can be considered as the amount
of exposure over time. While not all people show classic
symptoms immediately, the affects can be seen as both
acute, short term or chronic, long term. Symptoms include;
· Sore or itchy eyes.
· Runny nose & headache.
· Classic flu symptoms.
· Aches & pains.
· When affected by short term exposure the symptoms
can usually clear when exposure is stopped.
Toxigenic mould
Some moulds are now known to cause a variety of serious
health effects. Exposure can initially be identical to
the allergenic types but quickly transform into complicated
symptoms, theses can include but are not exclusively;
· Nose bleeds
· Coughing up blood
· Lung & sinus infection.
· Trigger various long term illness & hypersensitivity.
Prevention
Mould prevention is an obvious best course of action to
prevent both health issues and additional damage. Professional
drying & sanitation procedures should be undertaken
to prevent the formation.
Decontamination
Careful control of released spores together with there
mycotoxins is essential. This may mean installing control
measures similar to that of asbestos. While disinfection
with fungicidal washes may be effective externally it
is generally accepted that killing mould simply destroys
the spore envelope, which allows release some of the most
toxic chemicals known to man. Controlled removal &
decontamination are essential.
Restorex are fully trained in this field with all necessary
equipment & personnel.
How do you know if you have mould?
Not quite as easy as you may think, mould prefers the
darker hidden areas, where you may be unlikely to spot
them. Typically cavities, cupboards & sub floor areas.
Odour or unexplained symptoms can be a guide. Inspection
both visually & utilising sampling & analysing
techniques are invariably the best option.
Restorex can provide all services to you, and if your
damage is the result of water damage or flooding your
insurer may pay for the restoration.
